1. precedent: prior in time, order, arrangement, or significance
Ex:Voters demanded that the candidates keep the pledges made as acondition precedent to election.
2. recede: to slant backward
Ex: His hair is beginning to recede from his forehead.
3. secession: withdrawal into privacy or solitude
Ex: The secession of some southern states from the U.S.A. in the 1860sled to a civil war.
4. accession: the act of coming to high office or a position of honor or power
Ex: On his accession to the throne, he inherited vast estates.
5. antecedent: a substantive word, phrase, or clause whose denotation is referred to by a pronoun
Ex: The word "man" is the antecedent of "who" in "the man whospoke".
